The new battery will use antimony as a raw material

Release date:2021/8/18 17:28:45

Recently, American start-up energy storage company Ambri Inc announced that it has received US$144 million in financing to support the technological and commercial development of its new battery.

In the new round of investment, the company's existing largest shareholder Bill Gates also participated.

It is reported that the new battery will be more economical than lithium-ion batteries. Ambri's battery patented technology can make its battery life system last 4-24 hours, which will break through the barriers of lithium-ion batteries in terms of cost, life and safety.

This technology reduces the cost of electricity through extensive use of renewable energy sources and enables the power system to operate in a more reliable and efficient manner. At the same time, it can support energy storage projects with capacities ranging from 10 MWh to more than 2 GWh.

Ambri said that these batteries can operate safely in any climatic conditions without the aid of air conditioning. In the case of minimum degradation rate, it can be used for more than 20 years.

In this battery design, antimony is a key mineral in Ambri's battery chemistry. The company will produce batteries and systems based on calcium and antimony electrodes, which will be more economical than lithium-ion batteries.

Antimony is the most scarce metal among my country's four major strategic resources. It is mainly used in flame retardants, lead-acid batteries, semiconductors, military and chemical industries. It is expected that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, China's antimony consumption increase will mainly come from flame retardants, lead-acid batteries, polyester industry, semiconductors and military industries, increasing by 29.7%, 31%, 28.4% and 62% respectively.

The global consumption of antimony is about 130,000 tons, mainly concentrated in economies such as China (47%) and the United States (21.5%). The annual consumption of antimony in developed countries has stabilized at around 50,000 tons. The popularization of flame-retardant legislation in emerging markets, the expansion of the market for automobiles and electric bicycles, and the polyester industry have driven the continued growth of antimony consumption and has become a major incremental market for antimony.

Relevant agencies predict that China's antimony consumption will reach 78,600 tons, 93,600 tons, and 107,000 tons by 2025, 2030, and 2035, respectively, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.2%, 3.6%, and 2.7% during the period.
